Motorist Alert

Motorists are advised to be sure and use their headlamps while driving on two designated Daylight Headlight Sections of Highway 101 in Humboldt county. One is the Eureka-Arcata Safety Corridor, a five-mile stretch between Eureka and the Bayside cut-off, where the posted speed limit is 50 mph. The other is located between Fortuna and Rio Dell, from Kenmar Road on the north to Wildwood Avenue on the south.

As of April 1, CHP officers began "taking the appropriate enforcement action" against offenders in the safety corridors, rather than just giving verbal warnings. In addition, as of January 1, children under six years of age or who weigh less than 60 lbs. must be properly restrained in the back seat of passenger vehicles. And on July 1, California motorists will be required to use their headlamps when weather conditions require the continuous use of windshield wipers.

Also, California Highway Patrol policy is not to honor CH&SC 11362.5, the medical marijuana law, at least until the state issues ID cards as outlined in SB420. Surrendering medical marijuana to CHP officers could lead to confiscation or worse. Conflicting appeals court rulings have been issued about whether or not up to 2 lbs. of medical marijuana can be carried in a trunk compartment; those found with marijuana in a passenger compartment can be charged with an "open container" vehicle code violation.
